Highlights
The Leopold Museum houses one of the most important collections of early 20th-century Austrian art, the private collection of Rudolf and Elisabeth Leopold, art enthusiasts who amassed more than 5,000 works over five decades. Located in Vienna's famous MuseumsQuartier, the museum houses works by artists such as Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, and Richard Gerstl. The collection of masterpieces was unified in 1994, and the museum opened its doors to the public in 2001.
When young medical student Rudolf Leopold bought his first work of art in his twenties, no one could have predicted that it would become an obsession.
Forty years later, Leopold gathered more than 5,000 works and art objects into a private foundation worth 575 million euros. The collection, housed in its permanent home in a museum specially built by the Austrian state, is the largest and most visited museum in Vienna's MuseumsQuartier.
The focus is on Austrian art from the first half of the 20th century and includes the world's largest collection of works by the influential Austrian Expressionist Egon Schiele. The focus is on his radical and expressive works, created between 1910 and 1915.
There is also a remarkable series of works by the world-famous artist Gustav Klimt, co-founder of the Vienna Secession in 1897.
The permanent exhibition Vienna 1900 allows visitors to discover the diversity of an era marked by the idea of Gesamtkunstwerk (the total work of art that permeates all aspects of life). The works on display include Expressionist paintings, pieces of the Vienna Secession, and masterpieces of the Wiener Werkstätte, the Viennese arts and crafts movement.
