4. La Pedrera

This remarkable building was constructed between 1906 and 1912 and is known for its unique shape and facade. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and cultural centre, as well as a symbol of Catalan modernism , the Catalan Art Nouveau period.

There is so much to see in and out of this charming building. It is known for its unique facade of undulating limestone which has led to the nickname "stone quarry". Gaze out at the large windows and intricate wrought iron balconies, then step onto the roof terrace, one of the most spectacular parts of this building. You'll see the massive chimneys resembling twisted and standing soldiers, along with six stepped skylights.

Due to the conceptual design of the building, Gaudí created furniture, especially for Casa Milá. You will see the modernist style up close, which fits perfectly with the curves and waves of the walls and rooms designed by Gaudi.

Your ticket to La Pedrera also includes a free children's audio guide to make exploring the building fun and exciting for little ones. The unique and innovative commentary will introduce boys and girls to the world of architecture and is available in Catalan, Spanish, English, Chinese, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Japanese and Korean.

La Pedrera Facts

  • It has received the nickname of La Pedrera (the stone quarry) due to its rough exterior, reminiscent of an open-air quarry.
  • La Pedrera earned a place on the list of World Heritage Sites in 1984.
  • La Pedrera was designed to be a spiritual symbol of the Catholic religion, with an excerpt of the Rosary prayer on the cornice and designed statues of Mary, especially Our Lady of the Rosary, and two archangels, St Michael and St Gabriel.
  • The roof terrace is decorated with a mosaic of marble and broken Valencian tiles, as well as broken glass from champagne bottles.

5. The Barcelona Aquarium

Europe's only Oceanarium and boasts over 11,000 animals, 450 different species, an underwater tunnel and live food – look out for some of the star species, such as sharks, eels and rays.

You'll get to see 14 different Mediterranean-themed aquariums and learn more about the amazing creatures that call the ocean their home. See Humboldt penguins, watch sharks swim overhead, and admire the colorful fish in the tropical tanks.

The aquarium also hosts a regular calendar of events, including educational talks to teach marine conservation and shark cage diving.

Here you will find reproductions of 117 buildings, streets and squares from all over Spain. Stroll through a typical Andalusian neighborhood, a Romanesque monastery and many other buildings and museums.

You'll also find plenty of immersive installations and art exhibits. See how music and sound have developed from Baroque, Classical and Romantic times, right up to today.

The Museu de la Música in Barcelona exhibits a collection of over 500 musical instruments and documents that trace the development of music in time and space.
